Chapter Seventeen

Sam put her forehead down on the table in frustration. When she picked it back up, one of the many papers strewn across the table stuck. It was just as well, there was only so many more times she could see the look of disappointment in Nancy’s eyes. This was one of many reasons she didn’t mix business with feelings. Except she’d let that ship sail, the horse was out of the barn, the train was out of the station, the business-and-feelings potion was already brewing.

She pulled the paper off her forehead and rubbed her eyes. “Okay, one more time. I’m sorry I’m having trouble seeing the vision. Try me again. It’s like this place, but not like here. And like the castle, but not a castle?”

Nancy sighed. “When you put it like that, I’m not sure why you’re having trouble visualizing. Seems perfectly clear to me.”

“Hey.” Sam covered Nancy’s hand with hers and squeezed. “You said you had it figured out. I believe you. All I need is help getting what’s in there”—she tapped Nancy’s temple—“into here.” She tapped her own.

“Okay. In your book, there was an old lighthouse that was decommissioned and run down. The two women used it as shelter, right?” Nancy searched Sam’s face.

Sam nodded, not sure where Nancy was going.

“They knew the history of the lighthouse, its maritime value, all of it. But that history wasn’t preserved, and they were left with ruins. You and I are currently in a beautiful lighthouse with every modern amenity.” Nancy indicated around them.

“But you hate that we don’t know anything about the history of this lighthouse.” Sam rolled her shoulders. “I’m still not seeing the big picture.”

“That’s because I’m not done.” Nancy’s smile took any sting out of her words. “You wanted a resort, I wanted a museum, why can’t we have both?”

Sam felt her eyebrows reach for the sky. “You want a resort museum? Like the Louvre with cots and continental breakfast?”

Nancy laughed. “I said resort, not a youth hostel. Anyway, we can work on the branding. Why can’t we have the place your Tove and Jonna stayed except no war and not crumbling around them? Or this place but with historical acknowledgement?”

Excitement bloomed in Sam’s chest. “You are going to let me build the castle at my lighthouse.”

“There will still be no castles at my lighthouse, but the castle is a good model. I think you knew that when you brought me there.” Nancy hooked her pinky around Sam’s little finger and gave their joined fingers a little wiggle.

“You’re giving me too much credit.” Sam snared Nancy’s ring finger with her own. “I wanted to show you that the kind of resort I had in mind wasn’t as awful as you might have been imagining. I chose somewhere I thought you’d like because of the history, but I didn’t have a grand plan.”

Nancy winked and entwined another of their fingers. “But we can. You want luxury, fine, I’ll give you that, as long as there is also part of the island that is open to the public during the day.
